SUMMER LECTURE SERIES – Rooted in Research: Decades of Forest Discovery Two Centuries of Change in New Hampshire Forests by Matt Vadeboncoeur, Research Assistant Professor, Earth Systems Research Center, University of NH   New Hampshire's forests have been shaped by climate, soil, natural disturbances, logging, farming, and more — and ecologists are piecing together that long history using tree rings, old records, and field measurements. Understanding where our forests have been helps us make better decisions about where they're headed. This talk offers a sweeping look at the forces that have transformed our region's landscape over the past 200 years with an eye towards managing them sustainably in the future.   Bio: Matt Vadeboncoeur is a Research Assistant Professor in the Earth Systems Research Center at the University of New Hampshire. His research is primarily focused on carbon, water, and nutrient cycling in ecosystems. He has worked in ecosystems from the arctic tundra to the Amazon rainforest, but the majority of his work is focused on the forests of New England.

Ages 12 and Up   In celebration of our 60th anniversary, we invite you to join us in August for a month-long BioBlitz —a collaborative effort to document the biodiversity across our conserved campus. With two hundred acres of forests, fields, and wetlands to explore, the Science Center’s property depends on many eyes, ears, and curious minds to help uncover and record the plants, animals, fungi, and insects that call this place home. Using the iNaturalist platform, visitors of all ages can help catalog the living organisms that make this landscape thrive.   New to iNaturalist? Tarbell is a graduate from the Rhode Island School of Design and a United States Art Embassy Artist. She exhibits nationally, and in 2023 had a sol exhibit at the Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University. In 2024, she was commissioned to paint the awards for the New Hampshire Committee for the Arts Gala Award’s Celebration and continues her active exhibition schedule with groups and solo exhibitions. Tarbell has served on numerous boards and committees advocating for the arts in New Hampshire. In 2015, she received an “Outstanding Woman in Business Award” from NH Business Magazine, as director of the Mill Brook Gallery & Sculpture Garden for twenty-two years. Tarbell enjoys painting bright, complicated compositions, hoping that the viewer will always continue to find interesting elements in her paintings. Tarbell grew up in Rhode Island and was never far from Narragansett Bay. Her father owned a vintage wooden boat that we cruised from Cape Cod to Block Island. In 1961, she crewed for Chuck Paine, and his twin brother, Art, for the Sears (Junior) Sailing Rhode Island Championship. During college Tarbell ran two sailing programs teaching elementary students basic sailing skills while also sailing in numerous college races.

Challenge yourself to climb two of Squam's most iconic peaks by joining the Squam Lakes Association and Lakes Region Conservation Corps member Macie for a 5.3 mile round-trip guided hike to the summits of Mt. Morgan and Mt. Percival from 8:00 AM – 1:00 PM on Saturday, August 8th! We will hike in a clockwise direction, starting with the Mount Morgan Trail, ascending 2.1 miles to the first summit. We will stop there for snacks and water as we take in beautiful views of Squam Lake and the Sandwich Range. We will continue another mile along the Crawford-Ridgepole trail to reach the summit of Mount Percival, and take another break before starting our 2.3 mile descent down Mount Percival Trail Participants will meet at the Mount Morgan Parking Area at 8:00 AM, located along Route 113 in Holderness, NH. Please park in the Southern Lot. All are welcome on this guided hike, but it is recommended for participants that are comfortable with uneven terrain, short ladders, and moderate to strenuous changes in elevation. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Please make sure to bring lots of water, a packed lunch/snacks to enjoy at the summit, and weather appropriate clothing and hiking gear. This includes extra layers, sunscreen, a hat, plenty of water, etc. For more information, or to sign up for this guided hike, visit the SLA website (squamlakes.org/event/guided-hike-morgan-and-percival/) or contact the SLA directly (603-968-7336). The SLA also offers other guided hikes and Adventure Ecology programming throughout the year. These free programs are open to the public and cover a variety of nature and conservation related topics. Beginner, intermediate, and advanced riders will dial in their skills while making new friends and forming lifelong memories.  Each fun-filled session builds core skills in dedicated learning areas, pump tracks, berms, and on lift-accessed trails.  Attention to safety and rider etiquette is always paramount. Prerequisites: Beginner riders must be comfortable riding a two-wheel bike without training wheels and be able to use hand brakes with confidence. Full-face helmet, gloves, knee, and elbow pads are required. Bikes must have front and rear hand brakes (disc brakes are strongly recommended). Full suspension bikes are recommended but hardtails are acceptable. Rental bikes and equipment are available upon reservation. The Squam Lakes Association's water-quality data set is the oldest in the northeast, and we need YOU to help keep it going. Volunteer water quality monitoring is a great way to get involved in the Squam community, get outside, and contribute to important research. Join us to collect water column samples and a data profile at two of our monitoring sites, Piper Cove and Loon Reef, on Sunday, August 9th, 9:00 am - 3:00 pm. The purpose of this excursion is to get folks out on the water and show them how the SLA and its volunteers collect water quality data. Participants will get hands-on experience using our equipment on the boat. We will meet at the SLA headquarters and then head out on the lake to complete two water samples. Once we're finished, we will dock on Moon or Bowman Island to eat lunch and take in the scenic views. The SLA has been building its water quality data set since 1978. Our volunteer network is crucial to gathering samples and measurements at our deep-water monitoring sites across the watershed. Minors must be accompanied by an adult, and registration is required for this event.

The Weirs Action Committee presents its fifth season of free jazz band concerts on the Weirs Beach Boardwalk featuring the Boardwalk Jazz Quartet. The BJQ brings back the familiar tunes by Duke Ellington, Count Basie, and other jazz greats whose music once graced the Winnipesaukee Pier’s grand ballroom at Weirs Beach. The band also plays jazz arrangements of contemporary popular tunes as well as originals. The band plays at the middle of the Weirs Beach boardwalk on Sunday nights, beginning the last Sunday in June, and ending the last Sunday in August. The free Sunday night concerts begin at 6pm and end at 9pm.

Using the iNaturalist platform, visitors of all ages can help catalog the living organisms that make this landscape thrive. New to iNaturalist? We are offering short introductory sessions on Mondays and Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. Take part in our Bioblitz: Walks with an Expert series to learn directly from scientists and naturalists while contributing meaningful community science data that supports biodiversity research and conservation. SUMMER LECTURE SERIES – Rooted in Research: Decades of Forest Discovery After the Ice: How Forests Survive – and Recover From – Devastating Ice Storms by Lindsey Rustad, Research Ecologist, USDA Forest Service and Faculty Associate, University of Maine   Ice storms can coat trees in heavy ice, snapping limbs and causing widespread damage. As the climate changes, these events may become more frequent and more severe. To better understand their impact, scientists deliberately simulated major ice storms at Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest and have spent nearly a decade tracking how the forest responds and recovers. Come hear what they've discovered, and what it means for forests across the Northeast.   Bio: Lindsey Rustad is a Research Ecologist, recently retired from USDA Forest Service. She also serves as Faculty Associate at the University of Maine. Dr. Rustad earned her B.A. in Philosophy from Cornell University, M.S. in Forest Science from the Yale School of the Environment, and PhD in Plant Science from the University of Maine. Her areas of expertise include forest soils, biogeochemistry, climate change impacts, advanced environmental sensor systems, and the integration of Art and Science.

Have fun with your children or grandchildren with our "Moulton Farm's Little Sprouts" program this summer! Children ages 4 to 9, accompanied by a parent or other responsible adult who brought them to our farm, and our farm facilitator, Mikala Kelley, explore a different aspect of how food and flowers grow or what happens in different areas of our farm. Each fun-filled session features a hands-on activity such as a craft, planting, or a game. Some weeks include tractor rides or visits with special guests from our farm team. Children can attend one session, several sessions, or all seven sessions in the series. Our 2026 sessions start at 10:30 am, run approximately 90 minutes, and are held rain or shine. Why do moths get a bad rap? While most other pollinators tuck in for the evening, moths emerge for the night shift and continue to pollinate after dark. Butterflies and moths, from order Lepidoptera, are one of the largest insect groups on the planet. There are over 160,000 recorded species of moths in the world, with 11,000 species living in the United States. Join us after hours at the Squam Lakes Association (SLA) Barn on Friday, August 14th from 8:30 pm - 10:30 pm for a brief introduction on moth identification, life cycles, and their importance in our ecosystems. Following the presentation, we will head outside and use lights to attract moths for easy viewing. These light traps are an excellent way to safely observe the vast diversity of moths and other nighttime insects up close, so have your camera ready! Participants should also consider bringing extra layers, a flashlight, and mild insect repellent. Observing moths may involve standing for extended periods of time - lawn chairs are welcome! Complementary tea and hot chocolate will be provided. The Granite Man is a short course triathlon that attracts competitors from throughout New England and beyond. The Triathlon will begin and finish at Carry Beach which is located on Forest Road in Wolfeboro. The annual race regularly draws upwards of 350 triathletes throughout New England and as far away as France. The Race gets more popular each year, so register early to ensure your spot. The Race starts at beautiful Carry Beach on Forest Road in Wolfeboro and involves a 3/4 mile swim, 15 mile bike ride, and a 4.2 mile run. The event is open to individuals and teams, an we welcome first time and experienced racers. Go ahead and challenge yourself by registering and training for this fun event. This triathlon was established in honor of Albert Dow III, who exemplified unselfish devotion to the service of mankind. Albert Dow III gave the ultimate sacrifice, his life, in the mountain search and rescue of two complete strangers on January 25, 1982. A Scholarship fund was created because of this race and is now self sustaining. All proceeds will go to Parks and Recreation Department. The race starts at 9am. Sign in is from 6:30am-8:30am. Kids Camp Select Saturdays 9am-Noon Our Saturday Kids Camp offers skill-building and camaraderie for riders ages 6-12. Covering topics such as bike setup, body positioning, cornering, and jumps and drops, Kids Camp has something for everyone. Beginner, intermediate, and advanced riders will dial in their skills while making new friends and forming lifelong memories.  Each fun-filled session builds core skills in dedicated learning areas, pump tracks, berms, and on lift-accessed trails.  Attention to safety and rider etiquette is always paramount. Prerequisites: Beginner riders must be comfortable riding a two-wheel bike without training wheels and be able to use hand brakes with confidence. Full-face helmet, gloves, knee, and elbow pads are required. Bikes must have front and rear hand brakes (disc brakes are strongly recommended). Full suspension bikes are recommended but hardtails are acceptable. Rental bikes and equipment are available upon reservation. Kids Camp (Ages 6-12): $119* *Programs include full-day park and lift access. Bikes and safety gear available for an additional fee.

Ever wonder how a tree can tell its own story without speaking? If this sounds interesting to you, please join Lakes Region Conservation Corps members Leon and Macie for the Lesson: Read as the Lorax does! Join the Squam Lakes Association on Saturday, August 15th from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM for a hands on tree program designed for folks 12 and up. In this lesson, you’ll learn how seasonal growth creates rings made of light springwood/earlywood and darker summerwood/latewood—and how counting them can help estimate a tree’s age. You’ll also explore what’s happening inside the trunk by looking at key parts like the bark, phloem, and the cambium that help trees grow thicker. We’ll compare the look of hardwoods and softwoods, then discover why the same log can look totally different depending on how it’s cut. Finish by coloring and labeling paper “wood cookies” to see patterns you can actually spot. This class is made with all experience levels in mind, so anyone from beginners to experts can have fun felting! Students will need to bring pictures of the pet they want to model their project on. Tuition is $50 per student with an additional materials fee of $20 paid by cash or check to the instructor at the time of the class. Space is limited and pre-registration is required. Comedian Juston McKinney is back at the Colonial Theatre in Laconia on August 15th with his PARENTALLY CHALLENGED show. Using a multi-media presentation, Juston takes you on his hilarious journey of raising kids in today’s world.  This show is PG-13, so you can bring your teens, or that 30 something that’s still living with you! Juston has multiple appearances on the Tonight Show, 2 Comedy Central Specials and 2 Amazon Prime specials, but in this show, he shares his biggest achievement and challenge of his life…being a PARENT!   He has appeared on numerous Comedy Central shows including his half-hour Comedy Central Presents special and his own one-hour special.  He has appeared several times on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno and Conan O’Brien as well as a Showtime Comedy Special with Rob Gronkowski.
